Default 4.0 oil pump pic up tube

Does anyone know the correct way to install the oil pump pick up tube into a new oil pump on the 4.0 engine?
I can not find anything in the manual.
Thanks
Joe L

I have always thought it was safer to tack weld them. Some have retainer clips and some bolt in place but a weld is going to be the safest.

My oil pump pickup tube has 2 bolts holding it onto the pump.

Some are like Buck mentioned but others are less secure. It depends upon the brand. The OEM was held on with bolts as Bucks is but I bought one from Summit that had retainer clips. So how does the one you have fit Joe?

If you get an after market pick up tube that is only held on with clips, I'd do what Blue recommends and tack weld it. I wouldn't trust something as important as the oil pick up tube to clips.
I could just see bouncing your tach off the rex. limiter trying to get through deep snow or out of a deep mud hole and them clips letting go and starving your fire breath 4.0 for oil. that would be UG-LY!!!!

Default oil pump pick up tube

This is a 2000 XJ with a 4.0 engine.
It looks like it is an interference fit. The tube is slightlly oversize compared to the bore that it fits into. Both the pump and pick up are OEM and the correct PNs. There is a support bracket on the tube that bolts to a pump mount bolt.

I was thinking heat the pump and freeze the tube but Iam concerned about heating the pump.

Thanks,
Joe L
