How much after low gas light?
How much can 96 XJ drive after low gas light comes on?
I know my gas tank is 20 gallons, and I put gas to full today immediately after light turned on. Strangely, only 14 gallons went in. So 6 gallons were still left when light came on?
So assuming 18 mpg, i can still go 108 miles after low gas light?
Crazy....
Anyone ever actually drove until gas completely ran out to find out how much we can actually go?

whoa!
That's crazy! Mine comes on with around 2 or 3 gallons left. The most it ever did was with 4 gallons (put 16 in). I wonder if that's something that's different for every XJ?
I always like to see what the gas gauge is like when I get a new vehicle and I've driven mine from topped-off to under a gallon left a few times (don't like to go too low too often cuz of junk comin outta the tank!) My gauge seems to stick on F for the first 90mi then goes down to half when I've got about 10gal left, then goes down to just under a quarter pretty fast and hovers there for a while.
This all might change when I do the fuel sending unit here in a week or so! I'm interested now to see what other people find with theirs!?!

Ive gone 40 miles or so past the light coming on. I try not to go to far past, fuel is what cools the pump, you run it out of gas - you chance overheating the pump.

My light comes on with 8 gallons left in the tank, found that out yesterday on this forum. Was only going 180 miles before filling up with 11-12 gallons. come to find out, I can go for another 100 miles or so once my light comes on So I am putting a can in the back and going to 250 miles, or try to.

I was led to believe (by my owner's manual) that the light comes on in my 97 sport with 2.5 gallons left. Based on fill ups, that seems to be roughly accurate for me.
As for how far you can drive after the light comes on, only one way to know for sure. Bring water...

Haha thanks for the input everyone
So it looks like 96 and may be few other older models use about 14 gallons and light comes on.
So...... theoretically, I CAN go another 108 miles. Cool.
I probably won't push it though

I guess my first question is..Are you sure you have a 20 gallon tank? My 1994 XJ is listed as having a 20.2 gallon tank and even pushing my luck and running on fumes into a gas station I've never been able to put more than 17 or so gallons into it.

Hehe... Mine doesn't have a low fuel light. Has a ginormous gas gauge though. I can go 420 miles on a tank, less if it's mostly city driving

All XJ's have a 20 gallon tank....
The 20 gallon tank option is the same tank, they just moved the burp tube and adjusted the float in the fuel tank, so it instantly became 20 gallon.
How far can mine go?
Its got a huge gauge and no light. Plus the gauge has a mind of it own.
Full reads around 3/4 mark, and it will run forever once it hits a 1/4 but I've never put more than 14 or 15gallons in it I can remember.

My speedo don't work and my gas gauge flotes like a bobber. I Go off of running hr's like you would a tractor. Seems to work out great for me. After about 4 running hr's it's time to fill up. My tank is 18.5 gal and I fill up about16 gal's eich time. Try it, it works if you can do simmple math in your head
