Default Need exploded view of rear axle.TIA

Hi All,

I have a GC AWD 4.0L 1997, the problem is the rear wheel bearing is worn out & my mate is a mechanic who is going to help me fit a new one.

What we need is a exploded view of the axle please so we can see how it all go's together...the reason being we don't wanna pull it apart till we know how it go's because we don't want it blocking up his workshop.

Thanks for you time...

Alan.

We would need to know what axle you have.

In General:
There are 2 types of axles the world over (Dont go nuts people!)

#1 Type has a C Clip inside the center of the axle. You must take the cover off, and once again, generally remove a small bolt, that pulls a pin. Push the avle towards the center of the diff. then pull the clip out. Once the clip is out, you pull the axle out and the bearing stays with the tube. Pulling the bearing out of the tube is generally (once again) pretty easy.

#2 Type buried behind the brake backing plate on the end of the axle tube is a much smaller plate. It may be held on with separate bolts or the brake backing plate bolts. once these bolts are removed, the plate (and perhaps the brake backing plate) will slide off when you tug on the end of the axle. The bearing is is pressed onto the axle shaft and will need to be pressed off, and then pressed back on. Make sure the retaining plate is reinstalled BEFORE the new bearing.

No worries, as I said regardless of the axle, it will either be a floating bearing, or a pressed on. The trick is figuring out which one.

The Dana 35 appears to be a Type#1 axle. Look at number 18. That appears to be the clip.
As I said there should be a fairly small bolt, holding a large pin. Removing the pin allows the axle to be pushed in to pull the c clip. All of this is going on 10 (15) year old memory, but its pretty straight forward once you get in there.

You need to ID the axle first.

US model ZJ's came with D44HD's (or more commonly known over here as D44a's) and D35's. Export model ZJ's have been known to come with iron D44's. Is your ZJ an export model or a US version.

Each one of the axles have an option for an LSD.

If its a LSD you will have an assembly that looks like #9 instead of #7.

Quick dirty way to tell is to jack up the entire rear axle. Turn one wheel one way. The other wheel should turn the same way if its LSD.
