I just bought a '99 Cherokee Sport... Has 202k/mi and I've never been happier with a vehicle.

Only one problem... No DRL's

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a good universal after-market kit?

Concur. Besides, can they require use of DRLs if the vehicle didn't come with them from the factory?

Frankly, I can't stand the DRL idea anyhow. I see too many mental midgets around here who think their lights are on at night because they've got DRLs - despite the fact that they have no panel lights and no rear-facing lamps lit. Makes me want to build that aluminum-ball-firing spud gun I've been thinking about - or maybe "headlight howitzers..."

Or just a HERF gun so I can cook all of their electronics and they can't drive the thing anymore until they figure out what's wrong. It would also work quite well on those damned fools who go around "Driving While Yapping" - and doing neither well.

I have no problem with using my stock hl's for everything else

How much can you save and will it outweight the cost of the project?

So your insurance company is goofy? I can see running lamps in the daytime being necessary in certain situations (limited visibility, overshaded roads, overcast conditions, foul weather,) but I cannot see them being generally necessary - and can't see why they would merit a discount on insurance (I see them connected to far too much operator stupidity to think they're useful...)

But, that's just me. "Safety lies betwixt the ears" and all that, y'know?

I have Progressive Ins. and O can save about $50/yr if I have them.

And we all know the old addage about the penny, but I personaly think that the $50 is best served by being put to use on other things for my jeep.

Like: fees for off-road parks, gas, accessories, food, etc.

I'm jist trying to save where I can, ya'know... and of my ins. is gping give me a discount I'll tale it. I'm not picky.

I was even thinking about relaying my whole light system to turn on when the window is wet like the automatic one's on some cars, but would be too far over the top.

I can understand your wanting to take advantage of an extant discount, I just think that offering a discount for a device that allows people to drive around with their brains in neutral is asinine - just like having a discount for ABS (which has caused me more trouble than it's gotten rid of. People wonder why I drive older vehicles...)

Dumb "features" I've seen on cars:
- Antilock Brakes
- Speed-Sensitive Steering
- Automatic Windscreen Wipers (how hard is it to tell when it's raining?)
- Parallel Parking Assist (wha?)
- Daytime Running Lights (doing this as a rule has resulted in those "warbling" motorcycle headlamps...)
- Small windscreen wipers for headlamps (what's the point here?)

I've been saying it for a number of years, and it's becoming true: "Build a car any idiot can drive, and every idiot will have one." Seriously - if people can drive around with their brains in neutral, I'm going to build an ultralight helicopter and get off the damned road...

(EDIT - And don't get me started on some of the "features upcoming" that I've seen in Bosch...)

Can anyone recomend a kit for putting drls into the stock hls.

I know they make them but I don't know which to use.

Whether or not I use them is not the question, because I am going to use them.

If you are not a fan of kits then maybe you can help with a little knowledge on just using a Radio Shack relay and some wire.

I install drl modules all the time using Napa part number AHL102(thats the part number in canada, not sure if its the same in the states). Easy to install.

You cannot install DRL's into the stock sealed beam halogen headlights.
Why? They are sealed.


Your options include buying an H4 conversion kid and then retrofitting those with LED running lights or something.

I have a 99 GC. It does have DRL. I like them. It allow others to see you and when others have them, you can see them better. Dark color vehicles, shadows, unexpected conditions, it just helps. But I am not here to lecture or wine about it.

I use to have a 97 Cherokee, and Mopar had a rewire kit that allowed for drl. It was about $200 and the stealership. Scrubbed that idea and just put on some 50watt running light off a ignition hot relay.

The alternative is to just rewire the existing headlamps to come of an ignition hot to the existing relay so the come on when key is turned on and off when key is turned off.

Or. put a 5 pole SPDT relay between the light switch and the exsiting relay. this way you can run in normal mode (headlamps switch controlled) or in DRL mode (headlamps on when key on). And you can even further modify the wiring by spliting the lamp wiring so only the low beams are controlled. You will need to get into the wiring schematic of your sport to see how to best hook it up.

Not true, yes you can install them into any factory headlight setup. I have done many installations at work

I have installed them before also. That's,why I know that they make them. The only problem is that the store that used to sell them doesn't anymore, and now I need to find a new store.
