Whats is the difference between the 87-92 cherokee exhaust and the 93-01 cherokee exhaust systems?

i think the newer models did something different with the manifold, o2 sensors and or maybe a different cat setup. don't quote me on that though.

86 or 87-90 had the egr setup on the exhaust manifold.. from then on untill 99 some o2 sensors were added, I think the max was 2 sensors.. 2000-2001 has the two peice exhaust manifold made of cast iron..The better design is not suppose to crack, but i have my doubts. some of the 00-01 xj's had the two pre cats on the exhaust manifold, depends on what state your in.. the biggest change was made in
late 99-00 on the 4.0 exhaust system.. late 99 was also the year the 4.0 got the updated intake manifold also..

1987-1990 w/242ci will have provisions for the EGR system (I've never approved - there are better ways to go about what the EGR does that are more reliable and cleaner in operation...)

1991-up will not have provisions for the EGR.

The bend of the downpipe (between the header and the cat) may have changed with the introduction of OBD-II, I'm not sure. That would be 1995/1996.

OBD-II saw the appearance of "Downstream HEGO sensors" to monitor catalyst efficiency - this happened at the beginning of the 1996 model year.

The advent of the 0331 head (2000-2001XJ, 1999-2006 WJ/WK/TJ) saw the introduction of an exhaust manifold with "pre-cats" - catalytic converters inbuilt into the manifold. One for cylinders 1-3, another for cylinders 4-6. And this manifold is a spendy piece!

A "cat-back" kit can either include the cat converter or not - depending on the manufacturer. They generally do.

The location of the cat didn't change 1987-1995, and it started to get silly starting in 1996. The problem with 1996-up is the addition (as mentioned in my previous post) of the "downstream HEGO." If you get an OBD-II kit to put into an OBD-I vehicle, you can block off the port using a bung threaded M18-1.5 (standard HEGO thread - the threads are M18-1.5, and the hex is usually 7/8".)

You won't be able to use an OBD-I system on an OBD-II vehicle unless downstream HEGO bungs are added after the catalyst bed. Your local exhaust shop will probably have a boxful of these - they're standard parts. And the drill bit to punch the needed hole. May as well have them just do it, since it's the work of about an extra 60 seconds for them to just weld the damned thing in anyhow...

i just went last week to get a muffler for my 92. i thought it was a 93, so i bought that one.
there is a split with 2 different part numbers for mufflers between 92 and 93.
but my cat was rusted enough to fall off, so i returned that muffler.

i don't know what the difference is between 92 and 93, the pic in the book was different too. maybe it's the input and output size. the 93 was 2 1/2 in and 2 1/2 out. center in, offset out.
