Question 5.3/4L60e/NP261 Swap into my '89 XJ?

I am considering doing this within the next year. In order to meet all the California SMOG ref requirements I have to run the same transmission and transfer case from the engine donor vehicle (yes, they'll check).

So anyone done this swap using the GM/NP261 transfer case mated to a 4L60e transmission?

Thanks guys!!

havent done that one. but let me know how it goes cause im a gm heavy line mechanic and know that drivetrain in and out. i was actually thinking of a similar swap. let me know if you have any questions on how to work on the drivetrain itself.

double check your inspection laws before you do this-- I know ny requires that you can only put a motor in a car that was offered by the manufacturer the year your car was purchased-- for the xj,that means just a 4.0... NY typically follows CA.. so....

not trying to talk you out of it, just make sure you check.

C.A.R.B. should be at the top of your list for who to call before even considering this swap.

According to Novak, my stock Dana 30/35 setup is fine. Although if I come across a Waggy with Dana 44's I'll grab it.

This XJ is my wife's daily-driver. It'll get a 2" lift before too long (with new rear leafs to correct any sag through the years) and maybe a set of A/T 31x9.5x15's on the stock aluminum rims. At most it'll see some weekend sand dunes and an occasional trail, nothing too serious.

The full size '87 and earlier GM/NP transfer cases are passenger drop. All the full size '88 to present are driver side drop.

If you drive it like a granny!! and even then if you spin one tire on take off and it catches....your done.

Dont take my word for it look on you tube for all the videos of a 4.0 snapping axles on a D35 with ease........

I'll be honest, I am prob at least a year away from the physical swap in my XJ. I'll start collecting parts before then, but I am usually slow with my own projects because I wait for the uber good deals to come along before spending any cash (no whipping out the ol' credit card either). But when the time comes, I welcome the help since I've never done a LSx swap into a XJ.

I do LSx swaps all the time for customers, usually you'll find 2-3 LSx motors and transmissions in my place at any given time.

Right now I have 3 LSx/4L60e swaps lined up for different customers, the current being a 5.3/4L60e into a '67 Camaro. The motor is getting a cam/springs/pushrod/oil pan swap prior to installation and the PCM/harness is being reworked for stand-alone operation. I am just waiting on the customer to get his cam from Summit before I start. After all the engine work is completed, I'll have the customer bring me the car and the swap done in the car and running within a weekend.

If you like, you are more than welcome to come and check it out.
