well, it sounds better, but i'm not sure if i could call it amazing. i saw some on youtube with supercharger that looked sweet. but i'm not sure if i wanna sacrifice gas mileage. i mean my '99 gets 22-23 on highway on full time 4wd. don't believe me if you don't want. but i didn't just go by the digital monitor. i calculated it by the amount of gas used per odometer reading as well. my 3.7 dakota is lucky to get 16mpg highway on 4wd.

ok, let's just brainstorm the prices......
block work for rebuild -
head work (maybe 3-angle) -
aggressive cam -
new pistons and rings -
rods, crank, bearings -
maybe a hp oil pump -
mmmm.... what am i forgetting?

Tural, keep in mind a race between two vehicles is a race between two vehicles, not the two motors. Vehicle weight, gearing, aerodynamics, drivers abilities(the human factor) and motors make up a vehicle. When I look at two motors, I look at raw data from a dyno, paying close attention to what rpm range the numbers were taken, and the reputation in reguards to durability as well as how the motors were built(engineering/metalurgy of the parts). I personally love my 4.0 and the only thing I would change too, would be some kind of diesel i6.
One thing to consider too is that the Chrysler 3.7 has a three piece plastic intake manifold..I've never trusted plastic manifolds and have seen them fail myself, although not on the 3.7..yet. However the rods and camshaft are made using a powder sintering process, which is stronger than forged

oh yeah, i know too well that race between two trucks is not a race between two motors. But, all so well, a drag race shows at least one side of how good a powerplant performs in a certain vehicle. i honestly am not a fan of high speeds or extreme horsepower in a truck. usable medium horsepower and torque in a truck is much more valuable than a tire burning, parts wearing, gas sucking extreme horsepower.
in the same time to me a good (or maybe even excellent) powerplant represents the ability to not bend a frame, not break an axle, not rev 15k on highway and the ability to still pull out a grandma out of a ditch and skip an Exxon or two.

the guy that i raced, swore up and down that he had a 4.0 v6 in his 4-door wrangler. he said he will steal me out of the hole and then keep covering on me. so i figured that even if he can't jump the hole, he could at least keep the pedal on the metal. but he still couldn't start covering on me until mid 70's. i love my I-6. I haven't looked this up yet. So hopefully I'm not speaking too soon. But the Cherokee laredo came with a 4.0 V6 if I'm not mistaken. The V6 power info posted earlier is accurate info. But from my experience I'd still put my money on the Inline 6. between 2 Xj's. 1 2000 XJ sport and a 1999 XJ sport both with I6. I've put 400K miles. No serious issues that new gaskets can't fix.
If a lack of power from a I6 is a concern. You can almost pick those ponies up with bolt on parts. Intake, header, Exhaust, Throttle body and spacer, Ignition. Port and polish the head. Your set. Get better MGP and a nice sound.

my main question is about the variety though.
everyone knows that 4.0 is in top 10 motors of all times, the new 3.8 is a dang good motor, 4.0 v6 makes a lot of horsepower and is lighter, making a 4.7 stroker is basically like a shot of heroin, cummins 4bt is an ultimate alternative, heck you can even fit an I6 diesel with some mods.
what's worth the money? in order to use all terrain tires, heck, you need an all terrain vehicle. an interstate is a terrain too...
i mean it's starting to look pretty ridiculous to buy a new rig for an arm and a leg, and still keep paying buckets of cash for a new vehicle insurance, new vehicle taxes, and being unaware of the new technology starts pushing you more and more into the dealer's shops. and we all know they just wait by the front door with a cleaver to chop off your arm and leg.
