Default Low Pinion to High Pinion Swap - Dana 30

I have a 2000 XJ that I want to swap out my low pinion Dana 30 front axle for a high pinion version. If I take one from a 98 or 99 Cherokee will it be a straight swap of just the front axles or will i need the driveshaft from the high pinion axle as well? Anything I need to know before doing this? I a noob at this so any advise will be helpful =)

Assuming you have 4.0L and an AW4 tranny, then yes the gear ratio is 3.55.

Anyone have a picture showing both LP D30 and HP D30? How does one tell the difference?

Unless your running a big lift or larger than 33s i wouldnt waste my time swaping them out to be honest.

HP Dana 30 is stronger since it uses reverse cut R&P.

It's a very smart upgrade.

Yes but the majority who worry about this dont even need that lil extra strength. A waste in my eyes. Hell there are locals here running 37s on LPs in the tj community without issues just saying.

If your gona swap then go stronger or find a d 30 with a locker. no sense in putting a stock diff back in if you can put one in stronger with little work. I would go d 44 and you can find those ready to go in your jeep for a few hundred. At least have the new diff trussed or built up so its stronger than stock. Your doing a lot of work for not much better and really if you need that extra room and extra strength then you should do it right and a stock hp d 30 is a waist of time. Unless you are in need of a new diff because your current one is needing to be rebuilt, dont do the swap.
