Can i swap an alternator out of a v8 grand cherokee into a non H.O. motor? im looking for a higher amp alternator. found a powermaster 140 amp unit for 180 bucks. just wondering if there are any OE alternators i can swap in?

Exactly the article i was thinking of. Haven't done it yet but need to do it here shortly. Nice thing is that it's a "stock" upgrade.

Thanks for the info! I've been wanting to upgrade my charging system, but $300+ for aftermarket alternators was a bit too much.

So i talked to my buddy at dodge and he said that the non H.O. and H.O. alternators are NOT interchangable.

Through 1990, Jeep used Delco alternators with internal voltage regulators (Delco CS-130 for XJ/MJ, and I think 12SI for the YJ.) They swapped to Nippondenso across the board for 1991, with the regulator circuit in the PCM.

Any local shop should be able to upwind a Delco for you without too much trouble, and for not too much bux. If you can't find one by you, here's the shop I've been using for a number of years - www.kelleyswip.com/sjg.html. There is an ID guide on the site that will help you determine whether you've got a CS-series or an SI-series (I'm not sure, since you don't mention model. I could guess that it's an XJ or MJ, but I don't like to guess...)

hey thanks it is from an Xj and like i said i found a delco style 140amp powermaster for 180. but i might consider a rebuild and upwind on my existing alternator. Thanks for the info i def appreciate it.

NB: You will want to upgrade your wiring and fuse protection for the alternator - click the link in my sig for more information on that...

NB: The Delcos can be pushed to at least 200A max output - but most small shops aren't willing to do it for a couple of reasons: liability and parts cost. So, unless you're getting absolutely stupid with electrical accessories, running 140-150A should be plenty. If you need more, consider removing your aircon compressor and installing a "one-wire" Delco as a second alternator (the regulator is wired to pick up its signal internally, and therefore only one wire is connected.) Two-alternator systems can be quite reliable - Ford does it all the time on late ambulances and other emergency vehicles.
