Default Stuck in first gear

Hey guys, I'm new here to the forums so please be patient.

My mom has a 95(auto) Grand Cherokee that is stuck in first gear. She took it to have it checked out at a garage and they told her she needs a new transmission. My question is, are there any other things that could go wrong that I can look for and rule out before having to replace the tranny? And are there any write-ups on here for removing/installing a new one.

Thanks in advance.

Josh

I had the same problem and it turned out to be a bad sensor. Required replacing a $20 part and takes about 10 minutes to replace.

In my Jeep Grand Cherokee (2000) the check engine light went on and I was able to retrieve the error code indicating that the Output Speed Sensor was malfunctioning. Apparently when this happens, the computer will cripple the transmission and prevent you from getting out of first gear. When the sensor was replaced, the transmission resumed normal operation.

For details see: http://www.wjjeeps.com/speed_sensors.htm

Good luck.

M.

Thanks for the fast reply, i'll definitely look into this.

If anyone else can think of any other reasons please keep them coming.

I did the on/off ignition thing to check codes, and the only thing that came up was a code 55. From what i've read this means there are no codes?

So does this def. rule out any of the sensors being bad?

I pulled the TCU/SRS fuse under the hood and now it lets me manually shift in 1 and 2.

When I put it in drive it seems like it starts out a little sluggish like it's in 2nd or 3rd gear and will rev out but still won't change automatically.

Any suggestions on where to go from here is much appreciated.

Thanks

As I understand 55 is the last error code to be displayed. If no prior error codes where displayed then I guess this means the computer has not detected a problem.

Yours is a ZJ Jeep. If you can identify the transmission name, you can search for support. Here is some info I found.
