Breathers on top of valve cover-4.0
What will happen if you don't have them connected? I dont have the stock airbox, or the proper hoses to hook them back up to the intake so i just have hose on them venting to the atmosphere.
will this cause issues with vacuum if the crank case is not sealed?

the back one should be connected to the intake hit up a j yard and see if you can find the tube.
the front one you cant get a breather filter for and will be just fine
see pic you can see the breather filter dont mind the arrows.
thats in my zj which has more room under the hood for it to fit like that.
on an xj you might need to get the elbow and put it on the end of the elbow

it can be done but is NOT emission compliant.......also since you dont have a vacuum source pulling the CCV gases out of the crankcase oil gets dirty quicker.......

Yes i tried that for about a week and the mess of the oil coming from the breather filter isnt worth it i put it back to stock alot cleaner and safer when going offroad less chance to suck water other then having a snorkel.

one breather (open) and the other needs to be a valve, the valve is a one way valve. if you put one in both it wont vent/close properly. one vent, one valve.

I believe the fat hose in the front is air moving into the valve cover, and the small hose pulls air out and into the intake. I don't have a diagram or anything, but I don't see how a vacuum hose could push air. Thusly, putting a breather on it would act just the same as the tube that runs to the air filter

I don't know other then the dealer. but you might fond them in the misc breathers the autozone has or online.
Interesting. I was told it did, havent had one out of the cover to see. I actually don't think I have even seen a system with it constantly venting.
