In stock form I rode down trails that were rutted out so bad rigs with 38s would drag axle. Tire placement is key and you can drive through or over most obstacles. I had a buddy riding along and had him jump out a few times to spot in particularly tricky situations. Just don't be afraid to ask the lady to jump out and give you an extra eye if its necessary.

Mine is stock and I've had zero issues and know its capable, of course I wouldn't take it rock climbing
Even my old '88 MJ that was 2 WD would take a beating bigtime, in fact that was the most impressive vehicle I've ever owned....

235s will go just fine...a buddy of mine had a 4 banger TJ with bald 235s and he followed us everywhere...it wasnt pretty, but he cant drive either lol.
a stock Cherokee will do tons, especially if you know the vehicle well and know how to drive.

When mine was still rocking 235/75-15's, I took it down trails that I was advised not to even attempt with less than 35's and either a winch or another person to pull me out...
Went down then with no problem at all. Went back with the 33's and idled from one end of the trail to the other... The 235's impressed me

Yea I am impressed with mine also! Instead of doing a crazy huge jeep build im going to a small build. only about 3 inches of lift and 30 inch tires a nice front and rear bumper and thats probly gunna be it. I like it simple

nice. 30-31s will make an XJ an extremely capable rig. I've always liked the smaller builds, doing more with less. Plus it keeps the COG low

I seldom engage 4WD but yesterday I discovered the limits of my '98 (2" lift + 32" MT's) a particularly muddy, long steep climb which I'd managed, very untidily, 2 weeks ago - but it's rained a lot more since.
To give you an idea, it wouldn't even roll back down but had to be driven - & even that wasn't easy.
