Exclamation Speedometer not working, HELP!!

So I've had my jeep for just over a year and the speedometer has never worked. finally went down to the junk yard and got a used speedo for the transfer case in hopes that was the issue. luckily found the same year model at the local pick n pull. got home, the new/used one i got doesnt work either. So at this point i have no idea where to begin looking. ive followed the wires from the transfer case back to the motor and they seem to be in good shape. so is there possibly a fuse or something else i could check? as its electrical, not sure if maybe a connection came lose behind the dash, fuse blew...im lost. any thoughts would be appreciated.

Try amazon.com they are the cheapest that I've found yet on auto parts. Also try am auto parts web site. They have a very large selection of parts that are also cheaper than part houses.

Yes I did, the part you got for the salvage yard, did they check it to make sure it was good before you bought it.

It was a lack of grounding. After searching and searching, I narrowed it down to the gauge cluster. So on Saturday, I pulled out the cluster and did some clean up. I removed all the gauges, cleaned all the bolt locations with to ensure a clean connection. Tightened them all back down and it started working again.

From all the posts I found online, it has to do with the plastic expanding and contrasting in the heat/cold. As the bolts do not shrink/expand as much as the plastic, it causes connection issues. The bolts holding down the speedometer were somewhat loose. So after a quick rub down of cleaner, tightened the bolts back down on the cluster and its good as new.

I actually removed all the gauges as it was a good time to clean them all as well!

It's crazy how stupid little things like that can be such a problem. My buddies rig is having a similar problem. Maybe this is what's going on with him.

Good on you for getting it fixed. Now when a cop pulls you over you can say "Well, as a matter of a fact Officer, I DO know how fast I was going!"

haha, true but i think its off. going down the highway at 65 seems a lot faster than i remeber. will test it out sometime next week with a buddy on the highway to see how close it is.

ya have him pull it out and tighten back all the bolts back down on the back of the cluster, i bet thats his problem as well.

My speedometer sits at 44 mph while sitting still in my driveway.
Seems to hold true from that point on
At 105 on the speedo I seem to be doing about 60
